Będąc ponownie zainspirowany forum s40concepts, postanowiłem dodać swojej volvince odrobinę optycznego uroku. Ponieważ nie mam halogenów i raczej nie zapowiada się, żebym miał (konieczność aktywacji w kompie), pomyślałem, że pomysł montażu mesha, czyli gęstej, aluminiowej siateczki w otworach wlotu powietrza oraz zaślepkach na halogeny będzie dobrym pomysłem. No to do dzieła.

Celem tego poradnika jest pokazanie jak niewielkim nakładem pracy i kosztów przerobić reflektory H7 ze standardowych srebrnych na czarne. W skrócie – lampy H7 pomiędzy kloszem a odbłyśnikiem posiadają plastikową ramkę, której jedynym zadaniem jest… wyglądać. To właśnie ta ramka decyduje o tym czy lampa jest srebrna czy czarna, więc cały myk polega na tym, żeby ją przemalować. Co prawda można kupić gotową czarną ramkę (zwłaszcza taką z chromowanymi ringami, a’la lampy BMW), ale u mnie w ASO kosztuje ona marne 32 funty/szt. (nie wiem ile w Polsce, ale przypuszczam, że też niemało, zważywszy, że to defacto kawałek plastiku), podczas gdy koszt przemalowania to jakieś 6 funtów, czyli czarna farba w sprayu. No ale do rzeczy…

Zmiana termostatu, rzekomo jedna z najprostszych czynności serwisowych jakie można wykonać samodzielnie, którą miałem okazję wykonać wczoraj sam i faktycznie przekonałem się, że to bułka z masłem. :) Czas potrzebny na realizację zadania, to jakieś 10 minut, z czego 7 minut poświęcamy na odkręcanie i przykręcanie wszystkich niezbędnych śrubek.

Ever wondered why Eclipse PDT 2.1 does autocomplete so slow? Installing proper Java Runtime Environment might help. Here’s how:

1. Go to http://java.com
2. Click on that big, blue Free Java Download button in the middle of the screen
3. Download Linux RPM (self-extracting file), it will download a .bin file that then needs to be extracted to get actual rpm package (that’s what I call convenience)
4. Install rpm file as usual
5. Then, as root execute:

   alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/latest/bin/java 20000

That’s kind of it. To check if new Java installation is now default alternative, you might execute this:

[root@m4300 ~]# alternatives --config java

There are 3 programs which provide 'java'.

  Selection    Command
-----------------------------------------------
   1           /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-openjdk/bin/java
   2           /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.5.0-gcj/bin/java
*+ 3           /usr/java/latest/bin/java

Little *+ sign, as you would expect, means the default choice.

PS. Unfortunately Eclipse PDT 2.1 is still slow on autocomplete. :(

This is assuming your E71 with 200-series firmware is already hacked with HelloOX and Open4All patch by ROMPatcher, and you have full access to c:\sys and others.

Now, here’s the thing to do before upgrading to the latest 300-series firmware using X-Plore (or any other file manager of your choice):

1. Create y:\sys\bin directories
2. Copy installserver.exe into y:\sys\bin
3. Change attributes of y:\sys\bin\installserver.exe to Hidden, Readonly, System
4. Assign the same attributes to y:\sys\bin and y:\sys directories

Upgrade the firmware. Once that’s done, install HelloOX (assuming it was already signed for your phone with OPDA certificate!) and execute it. It will do its job, making your E71 hacked and ready for Field Test Display aka NetMonitor again. :)

Here it is, evad.zone is back again, following extreme anticipation among crowds of my devoted fans. As usual, I have specific purpose for it. Basically, I’d like to aggregate all sorts of content I publish over the internet (within many forums, socials networks, personal emails etc.) into one, consistent place, evad.zone that is. Previous edition of evad.zone was focusing on Linux tips & tricks. From now on, I’m planning to extend that scope slightly and throw articles covering many things that I could be interested in. Let’s say my impressions of new electronic toys and gadgets I’ve had in my hands recently, maybe some web development tips, or perhaps some tutorials on modding my Volvo car.

However, the most likely scenario is that I will get bored over time and naturally stop publishing posts in regular manner (read: at all) and after the next year or so I realise myself Hey, I should write a blog! And the history will make a circle yet another time.

Time will tell. So far, fingers crossed and welcome on board of 3562476241433rd edition of evad.zone.

Wicd is an application that manages wired and wireless connections in nice and easy manner. You might say that NetworkManager already does that and is enabled by default, but wicd has several important advantages over NM. Here are few:

• It just works. Really.
• Wicd works in the background as a daemon that connects to the network as soon as system starts up, not only after logging into user’s desktop. (You’ll consider that as a HUGE advantage if for some reason X server won’t start one day and you’d end up stuck in text-mode only, desperately looking for solutions.)
• It doesn’t ask you for a keyring/WEP/WPA passwords over and over. You type it into connection profile only once and forever.
• Allows you to define static IP/DNS configuration without a hassle.
• Did I mention wicd just works?
