Desktop-effects: windows hiding under GNOME panel

When I installed new and shiny Fedora Core 6 on my desktop-computer in the office and enabled desktop-effects, I noticed strange and quite annoying problem – all opened windows were hiding under top GNOME panel. Screenshot below, of just-executed gEdit should describe that problem a bit better, I guess:

I was digging Compiz preferences/settings/options hundreds of times, but without luck. One day ‘eureka’ came, and I reminded myself about one particular command:

[evad@dell620 ~]$ gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz

It resets all Compiz settings to its default values and finally brings a solution. Probably there was some one little Compiz setting screwed up, forcing these windows to misbehave…

I’m having the exact same problem, but I can’t seem to fix it. I tried the given command and the problem persists. I haven’t found much of anything on this problem anywhere else. Not sure where else to turn. Any ideas?

It’s the “place windows” plugin. It needs to be enabled for that to not happen.
